Mullein Torches

MULLEIN HAG TORCH

These torches have many names including Mullein Torch, Hag’s Taper, Witches Candle, Jupiter's Rod, King's Candle, Candlewick Plant and more. Historically used as a light source, to support rituals, ceremonies, cleansing, purification and funeral processions, which is likely how it has been connected to the spirit realm.

There’s a lot of fire tradition and lore connected with Mullein. In the middle ages the fibers inside Mullein stalks were gathered and dipped in lard for use as candle wicks, the spires themselves used as lanterns, and the fibers inside Mullein are great material for friction fire making. In Celtic tradition Mullein is regarded as a light sentinel, showing the way in the dark.

Energetically and spiritually, Mullein serves as a candle in the night to guide us through darkness and shadows; quite fitting for this time of year! Mullein also lights up our inner world to help us illuminate and process grief and sadness, emotions that are often held in the lungs. Igniting a mullein torch bears resemblance to the act of smudging, as it clears away negative energy and purifies the air; Many believe that it delicately thins the veil that separates different dimensions, facilitates a heightened spiritual connection and brings spiritual protection.

They can of course be incorporated into any form of ritual and ceremony that calls for light, a fire offering, or fire element representation; The invitation is to work with them according to your own unique prayer expression.

Each stalk is harvested after the seeds have spread and is lovingly hand-dipped in 100% pure beeswax several times. For this particular batch I spent hours dipping each stalk in the faint candle lit dark surrounded by redwoods. The sounds of the night kept me company. From the darkness they were born and in the illumination of burning flames they will return.

To use the torch, place the stalk in a taper candle holder or a burn safe cup filled with salt, sand, rice, pebbles, or earth. Ignite the torch by fire at the tip of the stalk as if you are lighting a candle. Once the stalk catches fire, the flame is bright and strong (hence the name "Torch"). These torches burn approximately 5 minutes per inch and vary in width because... nature!

~For all your lit up desires and heart fires, may these torches light the way. ~

Love,

Lily
